PVC vs Mesh vs Acrylic Canvas: Choosing Outdoor Blind & Awning Fabric in Australia

Quick answer: Australian outdoor blinds and awnings use three main fabric families. Acrylic canvas (brands like Docril and Dickson) is the premium choice for awnings — colourfast, breathable and water resistant, ideal for folding arm awnings. Sunscreen mesh blocks up to 95%+ of UV while preserving airflow and your view — the go-to for track-guided blinds where you want shade without feeling boxed in. PVC (clear or tinted) is completely waterproof and windproof, turning a patio into a usable outdoor room year-round. Many homeowners combine them: mesh for summer shade on one opening, clear PVC on the weather side.

Fabric comparison at a glance

Fabric UV block Rain protection Airflow View through Best used on
Acrylic canvas (Docril, Dickson) Excellent Good (water resistant) Breathable weave None (solid) Folding arm, pivot arm and traditional awnings
Sunscreen mesh Very high (weave dependent) Partial Excellent Good — keeps outlook Track-guided and cable guide blinds
Clear / tinted PVC Blocks wind and rain; tint reduces glare Complete None (sealed) Excellent (clear) Track-guided blinds enclosing alfresco rooms

What fabric is best for a folding arm awning?

Acrylic canvas is the standard for folding arm awnings, and for good reason: it is solution-dyed (the colour goes through the fibre, so it will not fade like printed fabric), it breathes so heat does not get trapped, and quality European ranges carry self-cleaning and water-resistant finishes. Plain, striped, tweed and textured finishes are available across the Docril and Dickson ranges we fabricate with. Mesh can be used on smaller folding arm awnings where you want filtered light.

What fabric is best for outdoor blinds?

It depends on what you are solving. If the goal is summer shade, glare control and daytime privacy while keeping your view and breeze — choose sunscreen mesh. If the goal is an all-weather outdoor room you can use in July — choose clear PVC, which seals out wind and rain completely. Tinted PVC sits between: full weather seal with reduced glare and more privacy.

Does mesh give privacy?

During the day, yes — mesh works like one-way glass, dark side sees through to the bright side. At night the effect reverses: with lights on inside, people outside can see in. If night privacy matters, choose a denser mesh, a block-out acrylic, or tinted PVC.

How long do the fabrics last?

Quality acrylic canvas typically serves 10–15 years; PVC and mesh similar with care. The biggest killers are rolling the blind away wet (mould) and leaving awnings extended in storms. When fabric does reach end of life, the frame usually has decades left — our recover service fits new fabric to your existing hardware from $350, roughly a third of replacement cost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix fabrics on one alfresco area?

Yes, and it is often the smartest design: clear PVC on the southerly weather side, mesh on the sunny side for airflow. Because every blind is made to measure, each opening can carry a different fabric.

Are darker or lighter colours better?

Darker mesh gives better view-through and glare control; lighter colours reflect more heat and brighten the space. For awnings, darker acrylics fade less visibly; all solution-dyed acrylics hold colour far longer than printed alternatives.

Is the fabric Australian made?

Our blinds and awnings are fabricated in our Central Coast NSW workshop using fabric from leading suppliers including Docril and Dickson acrylics and Australian-supplied PVC and mesh ranges.
