Ziptrak® Blinds

Best for: Patios, alfresco dining areas, pergolas and outdoor entertaining spaces where you want to enclose the area completely.

Ziptrak® is Australia's most popular external blind system — and for good reason. A patented zip-guide runs the full height of each side track, locking the fabric edge-to-edge and creating a seal that keeps out wind, rain, dust and insects. The spring-balanced system means you can stop the blind at any height with one finger — no cords, no locks, no hassle.

Where other straight drop blinds can billow, flap or leak around the edges, Ziptrak® stays taut and secure in conditions where other products would fail. If you're in an exposed location, or you want to genuinely extend your outdoor living season through autumn and winter, Ziptrak® is the product to choose.

Choose Ziptrak® PVC when:

  • You want full weather protection — wind, rain and cold
  • You want to maintain the view through a clear or lightly tinted panel
  • You're enclosing a space used year-round

Choose Ziptrak® Mesh when:

  • Shade and privacy are the priority, not weather sealing
  • You want airflow through the blind even when it's closed
  • Your space is in a protected location and full enclosure isn't needed

Straight Drop Side Retention Blinds

Best for: Exposed locations where wind resistance matters, or where a tighter side seal than a standard drop blind is required.

Side retention blinds are straight drop blinds with a guided edge — either a zip track, side retention arms, or cable guides — that holds the fabric edges firmly against the side channels. This prevents the fabric from billowing in the wind and improves the weather seal around the perimeter.

They sit between a standard straight drop blind and a full Ziptrak® system in terms of weather performance and cost. If you want better wind resistance than a plain drop blind but the full Ziptrak® system isn't required, this category is worth considering.

Which system?

  • e ZIP: Zip-guided edges give the tightest seal — approaching Ziptrak® performance. Best for exposed or coastal locations.
  • Alpha SRS (Side Retention System): Spring-balanced with side retention arms. Good all-round performance, easy operation.
  • Alpha Cable Guide: Cable guides keep the edges tracked. More economical option, suits protected locations.

Straight Drop Blinds

Best for: Verandahs, pergolas, balconies and patios in protected locations. The workhorse of the outdoor blind range — versatile, cost-effective and available in a wide range of fabrics.

A straight drop blind rolls or drops vertically from a head box or batten fixed above the opening. The fabric hangs freely at the sides — unlike side retention systems, there are no tracks or guides. This makes them simpler and more affordable, but less suited to windy or exposed locations where the fabric can billow.

They're the most popular choice for standard suburban verandahs and pergolas in sheltered positions. Available in mesh, acrylic and canvas fabrics in a huge range of colours.

Operating systems compared:

System How it works Best for
Convertible Rope and pulley or spring balanced batten drop Standard residential, easy DIY install
Gearbox Side-mounted gear crank handle Heavier fabrics and wider spans, precise positioning
Verandah Drop Heavy-duty reinforced design for larger openings Exposed verandahs, country properties
Alpha Straight Drop Alpha brand gear mechanism, robust commercial build Commercial applications and heavy-duty residential
Motorised Remote or smart-home controlled motor Hard-to-reach locations, multiple blinds, convenience

Lock Arm Awnings

Best for: Windows, doors and smaller openings on north and west-facing elevations where you want to block afternoon sun. Great for shading without completely blocking the view.

Lock arm awnings use a pair of hinged arms that extend the awning fabric outward and downward from the wall. The arms lock in any extended position — hence the name — giving you control over exactly how far out the awning projects. When fully retracted, the arms fold flat against the wall for a neat profile.

They're simpler in construction than folding arm awnings (which use spring-tensioned arms) and better suited to smaller openings. They work well on windows and sliding doors where you want shade during the day but want to fully retract the awning in the evening or during bad weather.

Available with manual operation (the arms lock and unlock by hand) or motorised (arms extend and retract via remote or timer). Motor options typically include Somfy or Alpha motor systems with optional wind sensor.

Pivot Arm Awnings

Best for: Windows on sun-exposed elevations, particularly north and west-facing. Ideal where you need to block high-angle sun and glare while maintaining outward visibility.

Pivot arm awnings mount on side arms that pivot outward from the wall, projecting the fabric at an angle — typically 40–50° from vertical. When retracted, the arms fold back tight to the wall, making them one of the neatest-looking awning types when not in use.

Unlike folding arm awnings (which project fabric horizontally overhead), pivot arms project fabric on an angle in front of the window. This makes them excellent at blocking direct sun on north and west-facing windows where the sun hits the glass at a moderate angle, particularly in the afternoon.

They're not designed for rain protection — the fabric is on an angle, so water runs off but the window may still get wet. For rain protection, consider a straight drop blind or fixed canopy instead.

Which pivot arm?

  • Convertible: Classic design, reliable operation, suits most residential applications.
  • Florentine: European-inspired with decorative valance options — suits period, federation and heritage homes.
  • System 2000: Heavy-duty Alpha system for larger window openings.
  • Alpha: Robust Alpha brand with full fabric colour range, good value.

Folding Arm Awnings

Best for: Patios, alfresco entertaining areas and decks where you want overhead shade without posts or structures. The premium choice for outdoor living.

Folding arm awnings are the classic overhead retractable awning — spring-tensioned arms extend outward from the wall to carry the fabric over your outdoor space. No posts, no columns, no permanent structure — just clean, unobstructed shade that retracts completely when not needed.

They're available in a range of profiles from compact open-frame designs to fully cassette-housed systems that completely enclose and protect the fabric when retracted. Motorisation is standard on most models — wind sensors are recommended to automatically retract the awning in strong winds.

Choosing your model:

Model Profile Best for
Sirocco Piccolo (FA22) Compact, open frame Smaller balconies and decks, apartments
Sirocco Classic (FA42) Standard open frame Most residential patios and entertaining areas
Sirocco Design (FA44) Architectural, open frame Design-conscious homes, premium finishes
Sirocco Cross Over (FA45) Cross-arm, wider spans Extra-wide openings requiring greater arm rigidity
Sirocco Semi Cassette (FA48) Semi-cassette housing Fabric protection when retracted, premium homes
Aluxor Stratos III Full cassette, motorised Maximum fabric protection, prestige homes, smart home integration
Aluxor Eco Cassette, value Cassette protection on a tighter budget

Fixed Awnings & Canopies

Best for: Windows, doors and entryways where permanent weather protection is wanted. No operation — they stay in place year-round and require zero maintenance beyond an occasional clean.

Fixed awnings and canopies are permanently installed — they don't retract or fold away. What they lack in flexibility they make up for in simplicity, durability and low maintenance. There are no moving parts, no motors to service, and no fabric to retract before a storm. They're just there, doing their job, every day.

Which fixed awning?

  • Dutch Hood: The classic barrel-shaped canopy. Powder-coated aluminium frame with fabric cover. Timeless look that suits a wide range of homes. Perfect over windows and doors.
  • Cupola: Dome-shaped profile, more architectural than the Dutch Hood. Particularly popular on federation, Victorian and period homes.
  • Tru-Steel Canopy: Steel-framed for heavy-duty applications. Suits exposed commercial locations and industrial buildings.
  • Caribbean Aluminium: Contemporary louvred or solid aluminium fixed awning. Clean architectural lines suit modern homes.

Shop Front Awnings

Best for: Commercial premises, retail shopfronts, cafes and restaurants. Heavy-duty construction, fabric signage options, and a profile designed for street-facing commercial use.

Shop front awnings are purpose-built for commercial applications. They're heavier duty than residential straight drop blinds, use commercial-grade hardware and are available with printed fabric panels for signage. Whether you need shade for outdoor diners, weather protection for customers queuing, or a branding element on your shopfront — a shop front awning delivers all three.

Fabric Recovers

Best for: Existing awning or blind frames where the fabric has faded, torn or worn out. Recovering an existing frame is significantly cheaper than replacing the whole unit — and most frames have a working life well beyond that of the fabric.

If your awning frame is structurally sound but the fabric looks tired, a recover is the cost-effective solution. We cut replacement fabric to your exact frame dimensions and supply it ready to install. Recovers are available for most common frame types — folding arm, straight drop, Ziptrak®, Dutch Hood and Cupola.

To get a quote, contact us with the brand and model of your existing awning, the frame dimensions, and your preferred fabric. We'll confirm compatibility and provide a quote.
